Lucy Alexis Liu (doğum adıyla Liu Yu Ling - 劉玉玲), 2 Aralık 1968'de Queens, New York'ta Tayvanlı göçmen bir ailenin çocuğu olarak dünyaya geldi. Evde Mandarin Çincesi konuşarak büyüdü ve İngilizceyi sonradan öğrendi. Michigan Üniversitesi'nde Asya Dilleri ve Kültürleri eğitimi alırken, son yılında bir arkadaşının teşvikiyle katıldığı bir tiyatro oyunu seçmesi hayatını değiştirdi ve oyunculuğa yönelmesine sebep oldu.
