Idrissa Akuna Elba, 6 Eylül 1972 tarihinde Hackney, Londra, İngiltere'de dünyaya gelmiştir. Sierra Leone kökenli bir baba ile Ganalı bir annenin tek çocuğu olarak büyüyen Elba, genç yaşlarda müziğe ve oyunculuğa büyük bir ilgi duymaya başladı.
